Saturday Night Citrus Racing has 7 Big Winners

(Inverness, Fl. 6/14/08) Mother Nature started off with some very hot weather before 7 divisions turned up the heat at Citrus County Speedway. Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and V8 Thunder Stock Rookies took care of the local racing teams and the Mini Cup and Florida Pro Challenge Series rounded out a full race card for the fans.

Fifteen Late Models took the spot light for their hard fought 35 lap main event that saw Dale Sanders come off the pole position and hold off outside pole sitter Keith Zavrel and 6th starter Herb Neumann Jr. for 13 laps before giving up the lead to Neumann. From that point on the point leader left the rest of the field behind to battle it out for a second place finish and put some more cushion in his race for the championship crown. Keith Zavrel spent the rest of the race holding off the balance of the field with Richie Smith and Scott Grossenbacher giving him plenty to think about.  Grossenbacher was sent to the rear for a mid race caution and came back with a vengeance in the race for the checkers. Herb Neumann logged his second win of the season followed by Keith Zavrel who paired his second place finish with a heat win. Richie Smith locked down third over Scott Millar and Grossenbacher passed 8 cars in the final laps to nail a 5th place finish. Daniel Webster took the win in the first heat, broke an axel in the hot laps for the feature which ended his evening with only a couple of laps run in the main to maintain some points for the season.

Larry Triana set the pace for the Street Stock 12 car field for the first six laps before David Foster and 2 members of the Quick team moved to within range to put on a 5 car run for the checkers. A couple of caution flags assisted the drivers to bunch up before David Foster nailed down the lead and went on to win his second of the year. Tim Quick rolled from 11th to put the heat on in the final laps but had to settle for second just ahead of Jason Murphree. Larry Triana held out for a 4th place finish over Mike Loudy who was an early front runner before bring on a caution and restarting at the rear of the pack. Heat winners were Tim Quick and Mike Loudy.

Sixteen Mini Stocks put on a great show with Kevin Harrod finding his groove from his 7th starting spot and making it 2 wins out of three races over the past few weeks. Chris Allen locked onto Kevin’s line and held off point leader Clint Foley in the race for second after Foley had to recover from a caution flag penalty to come back through traffic for a third place finish. Rounding out the top five were Richie Powers who came from 16th when the green dropped and 14th starter Chris Hooker. Harrod and Foley won the heat races.

Twenty three Pure Stocks took the green flag and John Drye who was the point leader coming into Saturday night’s action inherited his first win of the season after apparent winner Tim Wilson lost his 6th feature win and 8th heat win of the season in post race inspection for not pulling enough vacuum indicating an illegal cam shaft. Drye took the lead from his 9th starting spot and locked onto Wilson after Tim made the pass and held off undefeated Mike Hinde who recovered from a mid race caution that sent him to the rear for the restart. Curtis Flanagan ran his first race of the year from 19th to finish third in front of Wayne Heater who held the early lead, and Bobby Taylor to round out the top five from his 14th starting spot. Heat wins went to Bill Ryan, Bobby Taylor and John Drye.

V8 Thunder Stocks wrapped up the local race action with a 10 car field. Michael Martin started 6th and handled the front starters without too much trouble for his first win of the season. Josh Long was a late arrival and had to start at the rear of the pack and took his time rolling around the field for a 2nd place finish followed by pole sitter Jamie Shahid. Anthony Eckman recovered from an early caution flag penalty to salvage 4th over point leader Alex Wilder.

Seven Mini Cup Cars were making preparations for a big race up north and were time trialed for qualifying. Devin McLeod put the rest of the field to sleep for the win in their 20 lap main event. Brady Marshall, Zack Hoyt, Corey Whiten and Rick Fiore took the top five spots at the checkers.

Atlanta Georgia driver Brandon Williamson started 9th and made short work of the front of the field, dominating most of the 35 lap feature for the win. J.L. Snowdon made a late move around Paul White for a second place finish followed by White, Bruce Gibson and Jarrett Snowden.

Next Saturday night will be highlighted by Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s #88 National Guard Sprint Cup car at the speedway for a one time appearance. Open Wheel Modifieds, Figure 8’s, Sportsman, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinder Bombers and a 50 lap Pure Stock feature will be joined by the PBG Legends to round out another full night of racing. TBARA Winged Sprint Cars will be highlighting the race card on Saturday June 28th with a fun Suitcase Race at intermission.
